Lettering vs Calligraphy

Lettering vs Calligraphy

‘Lettering vs Calligraphy’ is a project by Giuseppe Salerno and Martina Flor. It consists of a visual dialogue between a letterer and a calligrapher, where they draw/write a letter responding to a keyword given by a moderator. The adventure aims to explore the capabilities of the two technical approaches. It delivers one letter daily and takes place online, where the visitors are invited to vote for their favourite.

She has worked in the Creative Industry for more than 12 years and does now design work, custom lettering and illustration for private clients and self initiated projects. Martina and Giuseppe met while living in Berlin. They showed interest for each other’s work because despite doing similar projects (identities, logotypes, typefaces) their technical approach to the solution was radically different: Giuseppe would write, Martina would draw. They also exchanged their experiences about running workshops. Martina teaches type and lettering design with pencil sketching and digital drawing. Giuseppe instructs calligraphy in various models (Fraktur, Copperplate, Gothic) with different tools (brush pen, ruling pen, pointed pen). Lettering vs Calligraphy was a project initiated to visualise the exchange between them. Martina and Giuseppe created a game that they would both enjoy playing and that could happen aside their daily work. This game delivers one letter per day according to a keyword that is at the same time a constrain and an inspiration, given by a moderator. The dialogue occurs online on a website allowing the viewers to vote and criticise. For Martina and Giuseppe the project is a way to produce work that they could use as an inspiration for other work they do (typefaces, lettering, logotypes). Making it online is a way of sharing with like minded people.
